The Upper East Regional Police Command has initiated a search for the rider of a commercial tricycle, locally known as a “boboyaa”, for allegedly assaulting a police officer during a routine stop-and-search operation in Garu.

According to a graphic.com.gh report on October 8, 2025, the incident took place on Monday, October 6, 2025, when a team of police officers, in collaboration with Community Protection Assistants (CPAs), set up a checkpoint along the Garu–Nakpanduri road for an operation.

Per a statement issued by Chief Inspector Abdul-Rahman Sumalia, spokesperson for the regional police, the team intercepted a tricycle transporting sacks of groundnuts with passengers seated on top of the cargo.

When he was instructed to stop and park for inspection, the rider reportedly became confrontational, physically attacked one of the officers, and fled the scene after the incident.

Police say investigations are ongoing and efforts have been intensified to apprehend the suspect.

“The Command is making every effort to arrest the tricycle rider and ensure he faces the full rigours of the law,” the statement noted.

The police statement also called on residents of Garu and surrounding communities to provide any information that could help locate the suspect.
