Police hunt for killer who stabbed friend to death over football

The Manhyia Divisional Police Command has mounted a search for an assailant who stabbed a young man to death at a slum in Kumasi in the Ashanti Region.

The suspect, whose name has been given only as Sadiq, absconded after committing the act.

Although his motive is not yet known, some residents are linking a confrontation that ensued between him and the deceased to a football match played between Manchester United and Manchester City on Saturday afternoon.

The body of Mustapha, the deceased, who is in his late 20s, has been deposited at the Manhyia Government Hospital awaiting autopsy.

But an eyewitness, Alhassan Mohammed, who spoke to Class News, had a different account of the incident. According to him the attack on Mustapha had nothing to do with the Manchester derby of the English Premier League. He said a misunderstanding had arisen between the two in the past and people thought peace had prevailed but the attacker was out for revenge.

“The deceased had come to buy an item in a house before visiting his friends in the area, so when the attacker saw him he indicated he would stab him and proceeded to do so. The victim screamed for help and the women in the house came to the scene. Upon seeing the attacker with a knife, they got scared and decided to retreat. The attacker stabbed the deceased twice and ran away,” he explained.

The Manhyia Divisional Police Commander, Reverend Superintendent Adane-Ameyaw Nyamekye, who confirmed the incident to Class News, said police had commenced investigations into the incident
