Police gun down mentally ill man who stormed station with machete

A man reportedly suffering from mental disorder has been gunned down by the Akyem Kwabeng Police in the Eastern Region after besieging the Police station with machete threatening to kill the officers.

The incident occurred on Sunday September 1,2019 at about 12:30pm.

Starr News has gathered that the deceased identified as Owusu Akyem who was suffering from chronic Hay fever stormed the Police Station brandishing machete threatened to kill the Police officers on duty.

Sensing danger, the Police officer locked themselves up at the charge office and called for reinforcement upon which a SWAT Team stationed at Akyem Kwabeng arrived at the scene but the deceased reportedly attempted to attack the SWAT team members with the machete upon seeing them compelling the officers to fire warning shots which the deceased defied and continue to advance towards them.

The officers then shot at him but rushed him to the Ebgresi Government Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Before storming the Police Station, the deceased had reportedly invaded a local Church and threatened to kill the Pastor and the congregants forcing the church members and the Pastor to flee from the church building.

The Public Relations Officer of the Eastern Regional Police Command, DSP Ebenezer Tetteh said investigations have commenced into the incident.
