Police gun down armed robber in shootout on Atebubu-Ejura Highway

Police personnel have shot and killed a suspected armed robber following a gun battle along the Atebubu–Ejura stretch of the Ejura-Atebubu-Yeji highway in the Ashanti Region.

The incident occurred on March 25, 2026, at about 11:10 p.m., when officers from the Police Intelligence Directorate (PID) Headquarters were on routine patrol duties near Kasei.

According to the police, “the patrol team encountered a gang of about five-armed men who attempted to stop their unmarked vehicle using flashlights. The suspects, wielding an AK-47 rifle, single-barrel guns, machetes, and sticks, reportedly opened fire in an attempt to force the officers to halt.

“The police team responded, leading to an exchange of gunfire. During the confrontation, one of the suspected robbers was shot and fell, while the remaining members of the gang fled into a nearby bush.”

The police explained in a situational report that, a subsequent search on the injured suspect led to the retrieval of several items, including a single-barrel gun, five live cartridges, two spent cartridges, two spent AK-47 rounds and six live AK-47 ammunition.

“Officers also recovered multiple mobile phones comprising a Samsung smartphone, a Tecno Spark 5 device and six assorted keypad phones along with a machete, a black hat, and a side bag containing coins and two wristwatches. An amount of GH¢ 310.00 was also found on the suspect.”

The injured suspect was rushed to the Atebubu Government Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival. His body has since been deposited at the hospital morgue for preservation and autopsy.

Police say efforts are underway to track down and arrest the remaining members of the robbery gang who escaped into the bush.
