Police in the Afram Plains South district in the Eastern Region have reportedly fled their post following demonstrations by residents of the area.

The residents are angry that the Police allowed the suspects who attempted to rob a GCB Bank bullion van at Maame Krobo to escape.

The attempted robbery led to the death of the driver of the van after a heated exchange of gunfire between the police officer in the van and the suspects.

The Afram Plains District Police Commander, Superintendent Obeng Dompreh on Wednesday told Citi News he was on his way to Koforidua to hand the suspects over for further interrogations but the Police there are yet to receive the suspects.

A resident of Afram Plains Abdul Hamid Ibrahim told Citi News the residents went on rampage this morning after hearing two of the suspects, who are believed to be Police officers have escaped.

“There is total confusion here. It’s very bizarre. The residents said they will embark on a series of demonstration until the Police bring back the suspects. If they don’t bring the armed robbers back, then they [residents] don’t need the Police commanders here in Afram Plains,” he added.

He said the mob smashed the windows of the Police station after they went there to demand answers because according to them, they suspect the Police deliberately allowed their two police officers to escape.
