The Upper East Regional Police Command has uncovered what it describes as an alleged plot behind a deadly attack linked to a chief enskinement dispute in Worinyanga in the Tempane District.

The incident, which occurred on May 26, 2026, led to the death of one Iddrisu Sumaila and left several others injured after gunmen reportedly attacked the residence of Sambin Halidu, the elected chief of the Tindorunga community.

According to a police statement dated May 28, 2026, the violence is linked to disagreements over the selection and enskinment of a community chief.

Police said preliminary investigations revealed that about a month ago, kingmakers of Worinyanga presented three candidates, including Sambin Halidu, to the Overlord of Bawku, Naba Zugraan Asigri Abugrago Azorka II, for vetting and possible enskinement as chief of Tindorunga.

“Preliminary investigations indicate that about a month ago, kingmakers of Worinyanga presented three candidates, including Sambin Halidu, to the overlord of Bawku, Naba zugraan Asigri Abugrazo Azorka II, for vetting and possible enskinement as chief of Tindorunga,” portions of the statement read.

Police said some members of an opposing faction allegedly rejected the selection and threatened to stop the enskinement ceremony scheduled for May 26, 2026.

“Members of the opposing faction, including suspect Majeed Bawumya Agbango alias Atan Majeed, allegedly protested against the election of Sambin Halidu and threatened to disrupt the enskinement ceremony scheduled for 26th May 2026,” it continued.

Investigators further disclosed that on May 25, 2026, suspect Alhassan Sabrina and other accomplices currently on the run allegedly met at the residence of suspect Majeed Bawumya Agbango, also known as Atan Majeed, to plan the attack.

The police said the suspects later stormed the residence of Sambin Halidu in the early hours of the enskinement day while preparations were ongoing.

“Consequently, on 26th May 2026 at about 0300 hours, while Sambin Halidu and his family were preparing for the enskinement ceremony, the suspects, armed with offensive weapons including a pistol, reportedly stormed the house, fired indiscriminately and burned his 4x4 Mitsubishi vehicle with registration GE 1115-13,” it added.

Police said several persons sustained injuries during the attack while Iddrisu Sumaila later died at the hospital from gunshot wounds.

The police have since arrested three suspects identified as Majeed Bawumya, 34, Milla Justice, 27, and Majeed Awudu, 20.

The Upper East Regional Police Command says investigations are ongoing while efforts continue to arrest other suspects currently at large.
