Police arrest man with 59 Ghanaian passports

Koforidua, July 27, GNA - The Eastern Region Police Command has arrested Jessie William Gonu, 56, for collecting GHc160.00 each at least 10 persons with their Ghanaian Passports under the pretext of sending them to the Trinidad and Tobago.

Speaking at a press conference in Koforidua on Wednesday, the Regional Police Commander, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) K. Gyamera-Yeboah, said on Monday, July 25, one Edward Ofori and nine others reported to the police that Gonu had collected their passports and GHc160 from each of them.

He said the victims claimed that Gonu promised to send them to Trinidad and Tobago to work at the mines and after taking their money and passports the suspect went into hiding and refused to respond to their telephone calls.

ACP Gyamera-Yeboah said the police telephoned Gonu and informed him that they had more people who were interested in going on the trip to Trinidad and Tobago and invited him but on his arrival at Koforidua, he was arrested.

He said when the house of Gonu was searched in Accra 59 Ghanaian passports were found on him.

Later, he told the police that he was working for one Bernard of Bernard Sosu Consultancy Agency but could not easily locate the offices of the Agency at Budumburam in the Central Region.

The Police Commander said the suspect would be charged with defrauding by false pretence.

When the press tried to seek further information from Gonu, he insisted that he would not answer any question without the presence of his lawyer who would present him in court.
