Police accused of terrorising Kasoa residents

IGP - John Kudalor IGP - John Kudalor

Angry and confused residents of the Kasoa Millennium City have called on the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to call his men to order as they have allegedly joined forces with land guards to terrorise them.

They claimed that some policemen had taken the law into their own hands with impunity, attacking both residents and the management of 21st Century Limited – an estate development company, with Kofi Asmah as its Chief Executive Officer (CEO).

The management of Millennium City has been battling with the issue of land guards on the 3,000-acre land at Gomoa Fetteh and Gomoa Nyanyano.

Mr Kofi Asmah is said to have acquired the parcels of land from the late Omanhene of Gomoa Fetteh, Nana Abor Ewusi, and the current chief of Nyanyano, Nana Obeng Wiabo V.

However, some sub-chiefs of those towns are not happy with Mr Asmah, seeking to review the agreement between his company and the chiefs. But he has resisted it, leading to the resurgence of land guards.

These land guards are said to be behind all demolitions at the Millennium City – most of which happen on the blind side of Mr Asmah – all because they also want portions of the land to themselves.

A certain Kwesi Alhaji has been fingered in the attacks against land owners who acquired their property from the Millennium City Company.

.
A series of reports lodged with both the police at the Millennium City and Kasoa have reportedly yielded no results.

Some police officers are said to be providing cover for the land guards who are said to be strengthening their resolve to do battle with 21st Century Limited, in a move to re-acquire the land that had been legally acquired by the company about 20 years ago.

As a result, there have been a lot of encroachments on the demarcated area belonging to Mr Asmah.

Frequent land guard activities have led to the demolition of many projects at the Millennium City, which in some cases had resulted in the killing of people.

All these continue to happen in the full glare of the police, who often appear to be handicapped or unwilling to defend the victims. This, according to the residents, is because they (police) are alleged to have received orders and directives from the police headquarters and the Central Regional Police Command, seeking to support the activities of these land guards and the chiefs who are reported to have ganged up against the Millennium City.

In one instance, a land duly acquired by a high-ranking politician of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the immediate past Central Regional Minister, Aquinas Tawiah Quansah, suffered a fate of demolition by these land guards. Though he reported the matter to both the Central Regional police and the national headquarters in Accra, no action has been taken as the wall he built around his land was demolished.

Residents and land owners are therefore calling on the police to come clean on the allegation of complicity in the activities of the land guards.
