Police Guard Kwabenya Land-Fill Site

A contingent of policemen from Accra has been dispatched to Kwabenya, a suburb of Accra, to protect Taysec Contractors, and to enable the smooth running of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA)'s on-going Waste Management Project, which has been halted by the residents of the area on the grounds that the project is a threat to human life.

In an interview with the Chief Executive of AMA, Mr. Solomon Ofei Darko, he revealed that the people cannot abort the project.

He said a committee has been set up to see to the problems of the people, adding that since the Vice-President and other government officials were confronted by the residents, work had been halted at the site.

The Public Relations Officer of AMA, Mr. Obeng, also confirmed that a contingent of policemen has been detailed to the site to protect the workers.

He blamed the current problem between AMA and the residents on the former government, explaining that the previous government took many serious issues for granted.

"They thought the government could do any thing, just like that. The government cannot take the people for granted."

Obeng said the AMA is facing this land problem with the residents because "the whole approach to the project was wrong."

Later Darko said a seven-member committee has been set up to see to the land issue, with their first meeting slated for today.

Continuing, he said in order to resolve the issue peacefully, the residents have been asked to write down their problems for the committee's deliberation.

He hoped the outcome would satisfy both sides since enough education is now being given to them on the project as well as their compensation paid.
