Police Arrest Armed Robbers

The Tema police have arrested four persons believed to be armed robbers, who shot and killed a Lebanese in broad daylight robbery at a mobile phones and accessories shop last Friday at Tema community six. The robbers, who shot Mr Rabih Douwe in the chest, are Nana Yaw, alias Nicholas Cudjoe, also known as Yaw Dekyere aged 22; Gabriel Seidu, 19; Moses Teager, 19, a Liberian, and Joseph Thomson, 25.

Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), Agnes Sikanartey, Tema Regional Commander of Police who disclosed this to the Ghana News Agency said at about 0930 hours, the armed robbers with a locally manufactured shotgun entered "Block Buster Phones and Accessories" shop located at the third floor of Tiwaah House and attacked the owner, Douwe.

She said the robbers made away with unspecified cash in local and foreign currencies, together with some mobile phones.

ACP Sikanartey explained that the robbers in their attempt to escape in a waiting car attracted the attention of the other shop owners who chased them and arrested two of them, John Cofie and Gabriel Seidu. The others in the waiting car escaped. Cofie and Seidu were nearly lynched, but for the timely arrival of a policeman on duty at a nearby bank.

The Regional Commander said the victim was rushed to the Tema General Hospital, but was pronounced dead on arrival. The body was, therefore, sent to the 37 Military Hospital for autopsy.

She said police linked up with informants to the arrest the other two accomplices namely Teager and Thomson at Community Two. ACP Sikanartey said sometime in 2001, Nana Yaw was involved in an armed robbery case, when he and others seized an Opel Kadett car and sold it. When Nana Yaw and his accomplices were sent to court, they were acquitted and discharged in August this year.
