Planned demonstration in Tema over an attempt to appoint Asare Kwasi Darko to lead TDC

Investigations by the press indicate that residents of Tema and its environs are planning to demonstrate against the appointment of Asare Kwasi Darko as Managing Director of TDC.

According to grassroots sources speaking to the press, Darko is an NPP politician, and his bid for a leadership role at Tema Development Company Limited (TDC) would not augur well for President Mahama.

This development has sparked significant controversy since Mr. Darko is currently involved in litigation with the same organisation. Critics have questioned how he can advocate leading an institution he is legally challenging.

Investigations also suggest that a prominent figure is lobbying at the presidency for his appointment, a move that has angered the NDC grassroots in the Tema enclave. These grassroots members are preparing to launch a massive demonstration if Darko is given the nod to lead TDC.

It is alleged that due to personal and land-related interests, he should not be appointed. Many believe this move is driven by selfish motives rather than the corporation’s best interest. Stakeholders argue that TDC deserves a leader with integrity and a commitment to public service—not someone entangled in legal battles or pursuing private agendas.

They told the press that someone involved in alleged illegal land sales, document alterations, and who was dismissed after going through all necessary disciplinary channels should not be handed control of TDC.

They further cautioned that the businessman close to the President, who is lobbying for Mr. Darko, should be held accountable, as such a character does not fit the MD position of TDC Ghana Limited.

Calls are growing for a transparent selection process that prioritizes competence, loyalty, and contributions to the NDC over favoritism and nepotism. Party members in Tema Central, Tema East, Tema West, and Ashaiman have expressed anger and vowed to resist any candidate who does not align with their views.

They are waiting for the government’s decision on whether qualifications and merit will prevail over political maneuvering.

When contacted for his side of the story, Asare Kwasi Darko stated, "As far as I know, it is the prerogative of the President, John Dramani Mahama, to appoint MDs. So how does one vie for such a position, which is supposed to be appointed by the President?"

A senior TDC staff member, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed that some individuals are involved in legal issues with TDC at the Tema High Court and that Mr. Darko is among them. However, the legal matter centers on procedural breaches and miscommunication.

According to grassroots sources, the businessman close to the President is doing everything he can to secure Darko's appointment as MD of TDC for his own parochial gains. It is also alleged that this businessman has been involved in numerous illegal land dealings in the Tema enclave.
