A petitioner, Alexander Kwame Boateng, has called for the immediate suspension of Professor Gabriel Dwomoh, the Vice-Chancellor of Kumasi Technical University (KsTU), and a probe into his academic credentials.

In a letter dated March 12, 2026, Boateng alleged that the Vice-Chancellor obtained a PhD from Atlantic International University, an institution listed by GTEC as unrecognised, but indicated Universidad Empresarial de Costa Rica on his profile as the awarding institution.

“The question now is: why did the Vice-Chancellor indicate Universidad Empresarial de Costa Rica (UNEM) on his profile rather than Atlantic International University, USA? At what point in time, and how, did he obtain the UNEM certificate?” he questioned.

Boateng also criticised the KsTU Governing Council for what he described as a lack of transparency and procedural fairness in handling an earlier petition submitted in December 2025.

“The failure to communicate directly with the petitioner is a significant departure from standard administrative courtesy and good governance, which requires that those who initiate a formal process be kept informed of its progress,” he stated.

According to him, the Council has failed to acknowledge receipt of the petition, has not communicated with him directly, and has delayed taking decisive action despite the seriousness of the allegations.

He further expressed concern that the Vice-Chancellor remains in office while under investigation, warning that the situation undermines confidence in the process and contradicts established governance practices.

“In such instances, as a matter of prudence and to protect the institution’s reputation and the integrity of the investigative process, the officer is typically asked to step aside or be suspended pending the outcome of the investigation,” he noted.

Boateng warned that the Council’s handling of the matter creates a troubling perception that could damage the institution’s credibility.

“This perception is deeply damaging. It undermines the moral authority of the University’s leadership and GTEC, demoralises staff, students, and other stakeholders, and exposes the University to significant reputational harm,” he said.

He also raised concerns about a possible conflict of interest involving a member of the investigative committee, describing it as inappropriate.

“It is disturbing that a member of the investigative committee is now advocating the disbandment of the committee at a time when the committee has not completed its work. This is a clear case of conflict of interest,” he added.

Boateng called on the National Intelligence Bureau to investigate the circumstances under which the Vice-Chancellor obtained the PhD from Atlantic International University. He further called for immediate action to ensure a credible and impartial process.

“Most critically, the Council, in line with best governance practices and precedent at peer institutions, should ensure the immediate removal of the Vice-Chancellor or ask him to step aside from his duties to pave the way for a thorough investigation into his academic credentials,” he demanded.
