People's Assembly - indication of good governance

Akuma (B/A) June 9, GNA- Nana Kwadwo Kwakye, Deputy Brong-Ahafo Regional Minister, has said the introduction of the People's Assembly concept was an indication of good governance of the New Patriotic Party administration.

Nana Kwakye was addressing the People's Assembly of both the Nkoranza South and North districts, at separate meetings at Akuma and Dromankese respectively.

He explained that the people's assembly concept instituted seven years ago had empowered the people to air their grievances and also promoted participatory democracy at the grass root level. Nana Kwakye advised Ghanaians to retain the government in power by voting massively for the NPP in the elections to enable the government to complete its development projects.

At Akuma, Mr Kwame Amporfo-Twumasi, Member of Parliament for Nkoranza South constituency, stressed the need for the youth of the various political parties to guard against any negative attitudes that could mar the December poll.

He reminded them that party opponents were not enemies; hence the need for the youth to tolerate each others views to promote unity, peace and understanding that is prevailing in the communities. Mr Amporfo-Twumasi, who is also the Deputy Minister of Energy, urged those who had attained 18 years and above to register, when the voter's registration exercise opens, to enable them to exercise their franchise.

Mr James Kwabena Appiah-Awuah, District Chief Executive of Nkoranza South commended the heads of the various departments for their active roles and responsibilities towards the development of the area. He called on the traditional rulers, assembly and unit committee members to join hands and organise their people to initiate development projects that would improve their living conditions. Madam Grace Obeng Donkor, Nkoranza North District Chief Executive, who delivered the welcoming address at Dromankese, complained about the deplorable conditions of roads in the area and pleaded with the government to help tar the Asekye-Krukese-Busunya and Dromankese roads to facilitate easy movements of the people and economic activities. Major Derek Oduro (rtd), Member of Parliament for Nkoranza North commended the government for initiating electricity projects to cover most of the communities and urged the people to appreciate it by retaining the NPP in power.

In an open forum, Nana Akua Owusuaa, Queen mother of Bono-Manso expressed her regret about the upsurge of drug abuse such as wee smoking and also alcoholism and illicit sexual practices among the youth and appealed to the government to help address the problem. Mr John Forkuo, a transport owner, commended the government for tarring the Nkoranza-Ejura and Nkoranza-Sekodumase highways. 9 June 08
