The Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has indicated that the government will now extend the dialysis subsidy to private health facilities.
According to him, under the new arrangement, the government will provide GH¢500 of the amount charged per dialysis session to support patients receiving treatment at private hospitals.

The minister indicated that the new arrangement was in accordance with a directive from President John Dramani Mahama.
Akandoh made this known during the inauguration of a 13-member governing board for the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, also known as “Mahama Cares” on Monday, October 13, 2025.
“The current arrangement for payment of dialysis is that if you go to public health facilities, we have a maximum amount of money we pay per session and that's about GH¢500. What we have realised is that there are people who also go to the private facilities, and so, it’s a necessity. His Excellency the President has directed us to give what is paid to the public facilities.

“So, for example, if you go to private facility A, and they are charging you GH¢1,000, the government will pay the GH¢500 and you'll top up to be fair to everybody. The CEO for National Health Insurance has been directed accordingly to take up that challenge,” he explained.
