Passengers advise not to pressurise drivers to speed

Winneba, Feb. 18 GNA - The Chairman of the Winneba-Accra branch of the Ghana private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), Mr. Kofi Attah, on Tuesday cautioned passengers not to pressurise drivers to over speed on grounds that they are getting late to destinations.

According to Mr. Attah, such practices could lead to fatal accidents with the resultant loss of lives and belongins. He was addressing an emergency meeting of the Union at Winneba to discuss important issues that affect the development of the Union and the nation. Mr. Attah attributed some of the accidents occurring on the road to unnecessary pressure some passengers put on commercial drivers. He announced that last year the union recorded only two minor accidents following intensive education the executive offered drivers working under the branch union.

Mr. Essilfi Annan, First Trustee of the Union said last year some recalcitrant drivers of the Union were suspended and fined in addition, for gross disrespect for passengers.

Mr. Essilfi said the measures would be maintained to foster good relationship between drivers and passengers. He charged drivers plying between Winneba and Accra to co-operate with contractors working on the Winneba-Accra route to avoid accidents.

He appealed to the Government to rehabilitate the 19-kilometre Winneba-Kweikrom-Boneuaku road to ensure the easy movement of goods and services.
