Passenger dies in accident involving UCC students

A woman travelling on a commercial bus from Takoradi to Accra reportedly died from injuries to her limbs when she fell from the vehicle following its collision with a bus on which 38 students from the University of Cape Coast (UCC) were travelling.

The students, who were members of the UCC Pentecostal Fellowship, sustained minor injuries from the accident, which occurred at the Third Ridge Junction in Cape Coast, at about 0 950 hours, on Sunday.

Assistant Chief Fire Officer, (ACFO) Semekor Kwaku Fiadzo, the Central Regional Fire Commander, in an interview with the Ghana News Agency, said the Tata bus with the registration number, GW 4109 R, on which the students were travelling, was going on a top speed from the Yamoransa direction

He said on reaching the Third Ridge Junction, two vehicles were about entering into the main road so he honked in an attempt to prevent them from entering.

However, he said, one of the vehicles did enter, so in an attempt to prevent an accident, the driver of the Tata bus veered to the opposite side of the road and collided with the oncoming sprinter bus.

He said the driver of a Mercedes ML with registration number WR 2940-14 upon seeing the accident parked his car, waiting for normalcy to return but he was also hit by the Tata bus and dragged to the bush.

ACFO Fiadzo cautioned drivers plying the road to be cautious and obey simple road regulations, especially on the onset of the rains, saying the accident could have been avoided if the drivers had heeded to simple road regulations.
