The Sanitation and Water Resources Committee of Parliament has issued a strong warning, urging the government to take decisive action to tackle Ghana's growing sanitation challenges.

The committee is proposing a significant overhaul of the current funding model by separating the 10-pesewa sanitation levy from the Energy Sector Levy and increasing it to 50 pesewas, as reported by citinewsroom.com on August 20, 2025.

During a press conference on Tuesday, August 19, 2025, John Oti Bless highlighted the urgent need for a reliable and sustainable source of funding to effectively manage waste and improve sanitation across the country.

"I propose that we increase the levy to at least GHp 0.50. This additional revenue can be distributed, with a percentage allocated to the National Youth Employment Agency to help hire more personnel," he stated.

According to Bless, the Nkwanta North MP and Chairman of the Committee, the lack of a dedicated funding stream is significantly hindering efforts to address the sanitation crisis.

"The amount currently allocated to my district, for instance, is around GH¢200,000, which is inadequate and cannot effectively solve sanitation problems. We need a clear and reliable source of funding," he explained.

Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) are struggling to maintain waste management services, particularly following the cancellation of the YEA-Zoomlion contract.
