The Parliament of Ghana, as part of its ongoing budget appropriation for the year 2025, has approved a sum of GH¢4,044,356,455.00 for the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Religious Affairs.
The approval followed a report presented to the plenary by the Joint Committee on Local Government and Rural Development, Chieftaincy, Culture and Religious Affairs, and Sanitation and Water Resources during proceedings on Thursday, March 27, 2025.
In its report to the House, the committee recommended the approval of the amount, noting that the allocation would ensure good governance within the ministry and support the discharge of its mandate.
The Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Religious Affairs, currently headed by Ahmed Ibrahim, is a merger of the former Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development, and Decentralization and the Ministry of Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs.
Agencies under the ministry include the Local Government Service, the Institute of Local Government Studies, the Births and Deaths Registry, the Department of Parks and Gardens, the Inter-Ministerial Coordinating Committee on Decentralization, the Department of Community Development, and the Land Use and Spatial Planning Authority.
The ministry’s primary mandate is to ensure good governance, deepen decentralization, and foster sustainable development at the local level while integrating the roles of chieftaincy and religious institutions to promote peaceful coexistence and national progress.
The approved amount will be allocated toward employee compensation as well as the payment of goods and services.
