The Second Meeting of the First Session of the 9th Parliament of the Republic of Ghana ended today, Friday, August 1, 2025, after 43 sittings.
In his closing remarks on the floor of the House, Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin reaffirmed his caucus’s commitment to holding President John Mahama’s government accountable, citing concerns over electoral violence in Ablekuma North, the proliferation of illegal mining (galamsey), attacks on journalists, and state agency abuses.
He also accused the government of targeting Ghanaian-owned businesses while condemning the demolition of a warehouse belonging to the McDan Group. Afenyo-Markin paid tribute to the late Akwatia MP, Ernest Yaw Kumi.
Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga rejected claims of attacks on businesses and accused the NPP of hypocrisy in criticizing state agencies. He noted over 1,000 galamsey-related prosecutions.
The Majority Leader further urged MPs to prioritize health during the recess.
Speaker Alban Bagbin, in a statement read on his behalf by First Deputy Speaker Bernard Ahiafor, urged MPs to use the break to engage in constituency-related activities and other committee work.
Giving an account of the Meeting, the Speaker disclosed that the session processed 497 questions, presented 13 bills (eight passed), introduced 11 instruments (six enforced), considered 73 statements, adopted 10 business statements and six resolutions, and approved various reports.
