"Palaver" Ordered To Refund 52 Million Cedis

The Auditor Generals Department has ordered the publishers of the “Ghana Palaver” an independent newspaper sympathetic to the NDC, to refund 52 million cedis it wrongly received from the administrator of the District Assemblies Common Fund to supply papers to all the district assemblies in Ghana.

The amount was for the subscription of newspapers for an eight-month period (May-November 2000). Revelap Publishers and Suppliers Limited, publishers of the The Palaver after receiving the amount, failed to supply the newspapers. In other instances, the supply was below expectation.

A one-month ultimatum issued to the paper by the Accontant General’s office for the refund of the money has not been complied with and indications are that the paper will soon be hauled before court. The Palaver and the Democrat, both NDC papers were reported to have been forcibly placed on the subscription list of district assemblies and regional co-ordinating councils.
