PPP condemns violence in Ghanaian politics

The Progressive People’s Party (PPP) on Friday criticised recent violent behaviours, gradually taking centre stage in Ghanaian politics, following the killing of the Upper East Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

The party said it considers the circumstances under which the late Alhaji Adam Mahama lost his life as shameful, barbaric and an indictment on the Ghana’s young democracy.

At a news conference in Accra, PPP expressed the need for Ghanaians to be awake and vigilant in order to reject the institutionalisation of violence in the country’s body of politics.

Nii Allotey Brew-Hammond, National Chairman of the PPP extended condolences to the wife, children and family of the deceased and sympathises with the NPP on the lost.

He appealed to the public, particularly members of the NPP to remain calm and allow the police to investigate, identify, apprehend and prosecute the perpetrators to serve as a deterrent to others.

He said the PPP, in the midst of the confusions and internal political power struggle, remains committed to stop the “winner takes all” system which does not allow citizens and opposition parties to actively participate in the political process.

The PPP-led government would ensure institutional reforms to reduce the power of the President by amending the 1992 Constitution to make sure that metropolitan, municipal and district chief executives are elected without interferences from the President.

He said the party would also strengthen the office of the Attorney-General by separating it from the Ministry of Justice and prohibit members of parliament from being appointed as ministers of state, to ensure greater performance and better accountability to the electorate.
