PNC condemns alleged coup attempt

Accra, Aug. 7, GNA - The People's National Convention (PNC) on Thursday condemned the alleged coup plot and urged Ghanaians to be patient and wait for December 2004 "to make the real change" through the ballot box.

"We want to take this opportunity to express our strong indignation and condemnation of any such attempt by any group of Ghanaians to destabilize our infant democracy," the PNC said in a statement to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) by its Leader, Dr Edward Mahama Cataloguing the effects of coups d'etats on democratic development, the PNC leader said the Nkrumaists suffered during the 1966 and 1981 coups.

Dr Mahama said they, therefore, "know what it is when a band of power-hungry self-seekers derail the national democratic process".

He urged Ghanaians to be mindful of the sad situation of Rwanda, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Liberia as a result of African Leaders' failure to listen and adhere to the tenets of good governance. Some media reports on Tuesday said a number of people had been arrested and questioned in connection with an alleged coup plot.

A government statement confirmed that three serving military officers, a retired soldier and civilian had been questioned in a routine investigation into matters relating to state security. However, the statement said, there was no threat to the peace and stability of the country due to the commitment of the Armed Forces and the Police to constitutional rule.
