PNC Leader Mahama Advises Rawlings

The leader of the Peoples National Convention (PNC), Dr. Edward Mahama has asked Flt. Lt. Jerry John Rawlings to dissociate himself from the death threats on the Editor-in-Chief of the Crusading Guide, Mr. Kweku Baako Jnr.

In a radio report monitored by The Accra Daily Mail in Accra yesterday, Dr. Mahama is quoted as saying it is imperative for the Flt. Lt. Rawlings to dissociate himself from the threats if it is not to be construed that he has a hand in the whole plot.

Dr. Mahama also urged the government to set-up an independent body to probe the matter.

The Editor of the Crusading Guide, Mr. Kweku Baako has received two letters threatening death.

In one of them dated, 15/07/02 and headed, "Final Warning," the anonymous writer says, "Now listen Mr. Kweku Baako. We know where and when you sleep. You have enjoyed a field day for far too long. Who ever is your sponsor must be taking a second look at the skies."

It continues: "The Rawlingses have no time for you, an empty barrel. Nana Konadu can take her court action, fine. But they should leave the rest to us."

The letter stated further: "When your legs, arms are amputated we shall see which one you will use in walking or which one to write with. Worse of all when your mouth is permanently stitched we shall see which mouth you will use to express your thoughts for someone to write for you...we are prepared to resist any attempt by any group, government or otherwise on the lives of the Rawlingses. We are not professional soldiers. But can be deadly. Just try it."

The other letter bears the name Ahiango ostensibly from the Volta Region. It states in part: "You are a bastard! You will soon find yourself in the grave! Believe me to be! You are joking. I should think your cup is full. Enough is enough. You are really a dog!"

This is not the first time the Editor has been threatened by anonymous letters. It will be recalled that recently another anonymous letter threatened to eliminate Kweku Baako and Mrs. Amoakohene, a social commentator and lecturer of the University of Ghana, Legon. A Special Assistant to the Rawlingses, Mr. Victor Smith is standing trial at an Accra circuit tribunal for allegedly masterminding it.
