ASP Ziniel Vincent, Brong Ahafo Regional Prison public relations officer, has said the general infrastructure of the prison in Sunyani is simply not the best and the prison lack adequate space leading to severe overcrowding and hygiene issues.
The structures are not suitable for rehabilitation and reformation due to overcrowding .
Speaking on Sunynai based radio, Metro 90.5FM Political talk Show "GHANA ON THE ROAD" Hosted by Henry Lord, PRO said "the structure of Sunyani prison need to accommodate 500 prisoners but now the total population is 860 which is serious overcrowding".
"Another reason why it is difficult to reform prisoners is lack of logistics and tools in the Prison".
According to ASP Ziniel Vincent Some of the machines and equipment in the prisons dating back to the colonial era are obsolete and have malfunctioned for inmates' skills development.
He said government is working assiduously to improve conditions in Ghana's prisons, but the challenges span different administrations and have accumulated over time.
ASP Ziniel Vincent said Government alone cannot solve all the perennial challenges of the Prisons Service in the country, "therefore call on individuals and private businesses in the Region to come to their aid".
ASP Vincent speaking no President John Mahama amnesty for prisoners to mark Republic Day no July 1, PRO said Brong Ahafo Region will have 150 prisoners out of 900 prisoners to get presidential pardon in the country.
