Over 70,000 health workers assured of employment amid staffing backlog – Health minister

The Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has assured Ghanaians that the government is working to address the growing backlog of unemployed health professionals in the country.

Speaking at the Government Accountability Series on Friday, July 18, 2025, Akandoh said over 70,000 qualified health workers are currently awaiting employment, a situation the ministry is taking seriously.

“Our biggest asset in healthcare is our people, the dedicated nurses, doctors, allied health professionals, pharmacists, and all supporting staff who serve Ghana every day,” he stated.

He disclosed that in the last six months; the government has successfully finalised the recruitment of over 10,000 nurses and midwives as part of efforts to reduce the unemployment gap in the health sector.

Speaking on the theme; ‘Building a Healthier Ghana Together: Progress and Our Shared Future,’ he emphasised the government's commitment to strengthening the healthcare system through sustained investment in human resources.

He also reaffirmed plans to recruit more health personnel in the coming months to ensure quality healthcare delivery across the country.
