Over 500 Ghanaians detained in Equatorial Guinea

Ghanaians living in Equatorial Guinea have appealed to the government to as a matter of urgency, come to their aid. According to them, authorities in the country have issued a statement to the effect that the presence of foreigners are no longer needed in that country.

Reports say about 500 Ghanaians have been arrested, whilst a few others are stranded. Speaking in interview with Peace FM this morning (today) one of the victims, one Kwaku, stated that their living conditions have deteriorated since the ultimatum was given with some of them dying.

He added that they are hard pressed for food and therefore, appealed to the government to make transport available for them to return home. He gave the assurance that the government is making frantic efforts to bring back home Ghanaians held up in Malabo.

Meanwhile, the governments of Nigeria and Cameroon have airlifted some of their nationals from the island of Malabo. When Peace FM contacted the office of Foreign Affairs in Ghana, the Deputy Minister, Hon. Akwasi Osei Adjei stated that they are aware of the current situation in Equatorial Guinea.
