Outbreak of Buruli Ulcer in Atwima District

There is an outbreak of Buruli Ulcer in the Atwima District of the Ashanti Region, with 52 cases being reported in the last three weeks.

The affected towns are Nkawie, Amoduase, Ahwiafutu, Adobaawura, Nyinahin, Seroso-Tempomu, Duase and Nkaakom, Mr Bernard Owusu, Acting District Director of Health Services, told the media at Toase on Monday.

Owusu said the District Health Directorate runs outreach clinics for the patients by visiting them in their homes but lack of dressing materials and a means of transport were making their work difficult.

Two volunteers have been trained in each community to dress the ulcers everyday and appealed to the Ministry of Health to provide the necessary logistics.

The Acting Director said the Nkawie-Toase Hospital recorded 7,384 cases of malaria, 15 of tuberculosis and 22 patients tested HIV positive between January and June.
