The Member of Parliament for Tamale North, Alhassan Suhuyini, has said the party’s focus at this moment is to ensure that President John Dramani Mahama’s administration delivers on its mandate and resets the country not on who will succeed him.
He made the remarks on TV3’s Keypoints on Saturday, October 4, 2025, in response to concerns raised by Dr Joshua Jebuntie Zaato over the omission of Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang from the latest Global Info Analytics poll on the NDC’s future flagbearer race.
Suhuyini dismissed the suggestion that the party was sidelining any potential successor, stressing that there is currently no internal contest within the NDC.
“Zaato makes ridiculous claims about the NDC muzzling out a candidate when there’s no candidate. In the first place, there’s no candidate. In the second place, the NDC is not conducting a poll. In the third place, the NDC is not carrying out any campaign or election,” he said.

‘Our focus is on delivering Mahama’s mandate, not who succeeds him’ — Hamza Suhuyini
A member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Communication Team, Hamza Suhuyini, has said the party’s focus at this moment is to ensure that President John Dramani Mahama’s administration delivers on its mandate and resets the country not on who will succeed him.
He added that the party was not concerned about polls conducted by independent institutions such as Global Info Analytics.
“Musa Dankwa and his team are independent, and they can choose to run polls on anything in this country. We in the NDC are not bothered by that. We are focused on delivering our campaign promises to the people,” he stated.
Suhuyini highlighted that President Mahama’s government was concentrating on key national issues such as the fight against illegal mining (galamsey), road infrastructure expansion, and economic recovery.
He cited the recent engagement between President Mahama and Civil Society Organisations on measures to tackle galamsey, as well as the signing of a three-billion Japanese yen facility to support road expansion projects in the Ashanti Region under the Big Push initiative.
“That is the focus of this government. People can choose to focus on what they want, but for us in the NDC, we are focused on delivering the promises we made to Ghanaians,” he emphasised.
Reacting to claims that the NDC has a tradition of vice presidents succeeding their predecessors, Suhuyini described such assertions as false.
“The fact that Prof Mills came after Jerry Rawlings and John Mahama came after Prof Mills does not make it a tradition. But even if it is, it’s one we’ll be proud of. Nobody is forced to succeed their boss it’s a personal decision,” he explained.
He also drew comparisons with the New Patriotic Party (NPP), recalling how the late Vice President Aliu Mahama was not supported by his party when he sought to succeed President John Agyekum Kufuor.
Suhuyini gets candid on post-Mahama NDC leadership
Suhuyini concluded by reiterating that the NDC’s immediate priority is to support President Mahama in fulfilling his commitments to Ghanaians.
“We are not interested in who succeeds us at this moment. It’s about who is supporting President Mahama to deliver on the mandate of the people,” he stressed.
