Oteng-Adjei's GNPC appointment suffers 'withdrawal' jolt

President John Mahama is more likely than not to withdraw the appointment of Dr Joseph Oteng-Adjei as new Board Chair for the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) StarrFMonline.com has gathered from sources within the Flagstaff House.

StarrFMonline.com can report on authority that although the staff and management of the GNPC were informed of the former Energy Minister’s new appointment two Thursdays ago, subsequent agitations from home and abroad are forcing the President’s hand to tilt the appointment pendulum against Dr Oteng-Adjei.

Local civil society groups such as IMANI Ghana and OccupyGhana have been vocal against Dr Oteng-Adjei’s appointment which came barely a week after he was accused of keeping two state vehicles despite having left office years ago.

Journalist Kweku Baako Jr also slammed the appointment over the same vehicle saga. The former Minister of Environment, Science and Technology returned a luxury four-wheel drive following the backlash that came with the exposé by former Deputy Energy Minister K T Hammond, who insists Dr Oteng-Adjei is keeping one more state luxury car.

StarrFMonline.com also gathered that the sensitivity of international oil firms to corruption is also weighing against Dr Oteng-Adjei’s appointment due to the recent vehicle saga.

StarrFMonline.com has also learnt that some staff of GNPC have come under a lot of flak for allegedly leaking the information about the former Minister’s new appointment to the press before the swearing in. Those staff, StarrFMonline.com gathered were accused of leaking the information with malicious intent – expose Dr Oteng-Adjei to media bashing so as to deny him the post.

Following news of his appointment last week, Dr Oteng-Adjei was expected to have been sworn in by the Petroleum and Energy minister Emmanuel Armah Kofi Boah to replace Mr Ato Ahwoi. But the ceremony has still not taken place.

While some sources tell StarrFMonline.com, that Dr Oteng-Adjei’s GNPC appointment has already been withdrawn by the President, others say the withdrawal is still under consideration, but added that the odds weigh heavily against the former Minister ever assuming that position.
