Organisations donate towards Farmers' Day

Accra (Greater Accra), 19 Nov. 1998 -- The Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MOFA) today received donations totalling 81.2 million cedis from eight organisations as their contribution towards this year's 14th national farmers' day celebration. The organisations are Agria Machinery, Continental Christian Traders, Polytex Ghana Limited, Agricultural Engineers Limited, Bank of Ghana, Standard Chartered Bank Ghana Limited, Wienco Ghana Limited and Agrovets. The items include irrigation equipment, fishing accessories, five power tillers, plastic gallons and agricultural sacks, 300 sacks of NPK fertilizer and cash donations . Dr Kwabena Adjei, out-going Minister of Food and Agriculture, thanked the organisations for "swiftly responding to the ministry's late request". He assured the donors that the ministry will come up with policies to enable farmers produce in large quantities in order to contribute towards national food sufficiency. Dr Adjei said comparison of donations with previous years indicates that donor fatigue is setting in and hoped that farmers will use the items effectively. He invited the general public, especially the banks, to participate in the celebration, which starts on November 30 and includes an agricultural investment forum, a Food and Agriculture Exhibition at the Trade Fair Centre, trips to demonstration irrigation farms and a grand durbar to climax the event on December Four.
