The Member of Parliament for Gushegu, Alhassan Sulemana Tampuli, has said that the Minority Caucus in Parliament is not opposed to the approval of Chief Justice nominee Paul Baffoe-Bonnie on personal grounds.
According to him, their opposition is based on what they believe are legal matters currently pending before the courts.

Tampuli explained that it is only right for the unresolved court cases concerning the removal of former Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo to be settled before any lingering matters remain.
Speaking on the floor of Parliament during a debate on Thursday, November 13, 2025, Tampuli said, “President Kufuor again found him suitable to take him to the Supreme Court. So, Mr Speaker, largely we on this side of the divide are not opposed to the nomination of Justice Baffoe-Bonnie for any personal reasons.
“We are opposed to his nomination based on principle of dependency of matters by the Justice Torkornoo, which are still pending before courts. And we have taken this principal position just to let you know that we do not have any issues.”
Further explaining his position, the lawmaker noted that the concerns and issues raised by the former Chief Justice regarding the infringement of her rights must not be overlooked.
He also expressed concern about a possible constitutional crisis if Justice Baffoe-Bonnie is approved as Chief Justice and the former Chief Justice later wins a ruling in her favor.
“… Mr Speaker, what we are saying is that if we go ahead to confirm Justice Baffoe-Bonnie and he becomes a Chief Justice, and in the events that the pending cases terminate in her favor, what happens to that office? Mr Speaker, we anticipate that there will be constitutional nuclear meltdown and that is what we intend to avoid.”
