Re: APPOINTMENT OF NEW CONSUL-GENERAL TO TORONTO

Our attention has been drawn to unconfirmed reports in the ?Ghanaian News? newspaper and within the community that a Filipino-Canadian is to be appointed as Consul-General to Toronto. We are writing to enquire about the veracity of such news, which has elicited anger from members of our community.

Should this appointment be true, it will deeply damage the credibility of the Government in the eyes of our members who feel that the Ghanaian-Canadian Community in Toronto abounds in skilled talents to perform such a role. The whole subtext of such an appointment will be to say non-Ghanaians can perform the job better and this is a notion that the leadership of our community have been working hard to challenge and repudiate in the Canadian imagination and consciousness. Such an appointment will send the wrong message to the youth and younger generation here. While it?s the prerogative of the Executive to make such appointments, we believe that the negativity generated from the unconfirmed reports should be construed to portend a difficulty, which will confront the non-Ghanaian appointee if it is indeed implemented.

Our organization is prepared to cooperate with the Government to identify suitable personalities within the Ghanaian-Canadian community to perform such a role.

We hope to hear from you shortly on this issue. Thanks in anticipation.

Sincerely,
Tony Amihere
