Only 40 Per Cent Of Ghanaians Enjoy Electricity

Sunyani The Director of Organisational Services of the Volta River Authority (VRA), Mr Mac Addo, said although the economic recovery programme has increased local demand for electricity, only 40 per cent of the people enjoy the commodity.

He said since electricity is not rpt not a luxury but is required for development, the Authority will ensure that power is extended to the whole country. VRA will therefore re-construct the Bui dam in the Brong Ahafo region and 16 others in other parts of the country. Mr Addo was speaking at a public forum at Sunyani to explain the need to increase electricity tariffs to the people. Mr Addo said VRA would need an injection of 400 billion cedis to enable it generate, transmit and distribute power efficiently to its consumers by the year 2005. The Sunyani District Chief Executive, Mr Kwadwo Nyamekye Marfo who chaired the function, said power has become the focus of industrialisation and development all over the world. He appealed to the VRA to be considerate in their demand for increased tariffs.
