One suspect freed, two remanded over Obrachire SHS assault case

Magistrate’s Court in Agona Swedru has remanded students into prison custody for two weeks for their involvement in violent attack on a student of Awutu Obrachire Senior High School during an inter-school sports event.

The incident which occurred on Thursday, February 19, 2026, during an inter-school sports games held at the Swedru School of Business (SWESBUS) left the victim injured after he was pelted with stones and beaten by the suspects.

Two accused persons, Benedict Appiah and Bilal Mamid, both aged 18, appeared before the court, but their pleas were not taken. They are to be re-arraigned on Wednesday, March 11, 2026.

According to a report by graphiconline.com, on February 26, 2026, the third student, Joseph Aidoo, who was arraigned alongside the two suspects, was freed after he pleaded with the court for forgiveness.

They have been charged with conspiracy to commit the crime of assault and the commission of the crime of assault.

Presenting the facts, the Prosecutor, Inspector Cosmos Afadzie, told the court, presided over by Victor Kusi, that the two accused persons violently assaulted a student of Obrachire Senior High School during the inter-schools sports games.

Inspector Afadzie said “a video of the assault went viral, drawing the attention of the Director of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), COP Lydia Yaako Donkor, prompting her to visit the Swedru School of Business to meet its management.”

According to the prosecutor, during the visit, the Director of CID ordered the Headmaster of SWESBUS, Kojo Frempong, to produce the students involved in the violent clash to the police, or the police would be compelled to use other means to arrest them.

He told the court that following the directive, three students of SWESBUS were handed over to the Agona Swedru Divisional Police Command on Tuesday, February 24, 2026, for further investigations and prosecution.
