One person has been shot dead, while several others sustained varying degrees of injuries, following sporadic gunfire in Sampa, in the Jaman North District of the Bono Region.

The incident, which occurred on Wednesday, September 10, 2025, also saw several properties, including parts of the local market, set ablaze. Residents fled to safety to avoid being caught in the crossfire.

Independent checks by GhanaWeb indicate that the violence is linked to renewed tensions surrounding a protracted chieftaincy dispute between rival factions in the town.

Further investigations revealed that a police officer was among those caught in the crossfire. The officer, who sustained gunshot wounds, is currently receiving medical attention at the Sampa Government Hospital.

The District Chief Executive (DCE) for Jaman North, George Adane, confirmed the incident to GhanaWeb, describing a grim situation on the ground. He disclosed that, beyond the tragic loss of life and injuries, homes and other properties were destroyed.

“There was indeed a shooting incident in Sampa yesterday, which led to the death of a woman and injuries to others. Additionally, properties have been burnt over the chieftaincy issue in Sampa,” Adane said.

In response, a joint team of 100 police officers and 40 military personnel has been deployed to Sampa to contain the violence, protect lives and property, and prevent further escalation.

“As I speak, security has been beefed up in Sampa with the deployment of 100 police officers and 40 military personnel to the community to help restore order,” he added.

Meanwhile, the Ghana Police Service announced that calm has been restored in the area following the clashes.

“The Inspector-General of Police has deployed reinforcement teams to Sampa, in the Bono Region, following violent chieftaincy disturbances on 10th September, 2025, which resulted in the death of one person and injuries to several others. The Police have since restored calm, strengthened security, and intensified patrols within Sampa and surrounding communities,” the statement said.
