One Record Falls In Northern Region Games

Gambaga (N/R), Aug, 17, -- Mariama Gariba of Saboba/ Chereponi District set the only new record in the week-long eleventh Northern Region Basic Education inter-district sports festival which eneded at Gambaga in the East Mambprusi District at the weekend. Mariama's jump of 1.48 metres in the women's high jump, erased the existing nine-year-old record of 1.45 metres set by Cecilia Salifu of East Mamprusi in 1988 in Tamale. Tamale District collected almost all the trophies at stake except the women's volleyball trophy which went to Bole District while East Gonja District took the best behaved district award. Tamale District won both the boys' and girls' trophies in athletics with 131 and 153 points respectively and beat East Mamprusi 3-0 in the final football match. They again won the trophies in netball, table tennis and boys' volleyball. In boys' athletics, East Mamprusi were second with 79 points followed by Nanumba District with 77 points. In the girls' division, Nanumba District placed second with 99 points and East Mamprusi, third with 66 points. The other participating districts, Zabugu/Tatale (73 points), Tolon/Kumbungu (30 points), Saboba/Chereponi (26 points), West Mamprusi (22 points), Savelugu/Nanton (21 points) and Gushiegu/Karaga three points, followed in the order. Four other districts, Bolga, West Gonja, East Gonja and Yendi failed to compete in the athletics. The next festival will be hosted by Bole District.
