Okada riders clash with police

A clamp down on commercial motor operators popularly known as Okada by the police in Aveyime near Sogakope in the Volta Region has resulted in the death two.

The death of the two unidentified men has triggered a clash between the motor riders and the police.

Scores of commercial motorbike transport riders besieged the Aveyime Police Station burning tyres in front of the police station and trying to make forceful entry into the station.

According to Class FM, the police were trying to clamp down on the activities of the riders which flout motor and traffic regulations and in an attempt to escape from the police the two deceased had a crash.

However a press statement issued by ASP David Eklu, Director-General of Public Affairs in the region said the police is closely monitoring the situation and will engage with various community leaders in Aveyime to ensure law and order.

The law enforcement body also assured the people of Aveyime that the issue will be investigated thoroughly in order to establish what led to the incident.
