Officers disperse after NIA no-show

Some officers who lined up at Burma Camp on Monday to get registered for their national identification card had to return to their bases in disappointment.

The nationwide registration exercise has been scheduled to start in the Greater Accra Region on Monday.

The exercise was to begin at 7:00am at some key state agencies and institutions like Jubilee House, Ministry of Defence, Judicial Service, BNI, and the various security bodies including prisons and the military.

Parliament would have its turn on Tuesday.

At Burma Camp, Media General’s Kwabena Adu-Gyamfi reported on 3FM’s Midday News that about 20 officers had queued in the morning in readiness for the exercise.

However, after waiting for registration officials from the National Identification Authority (NIA) in vain, the officers retreated to their bases.

There was no official statement from NIA regarding the absence of its officials at registration centers.

From the headquarters of NIA in Accra, Media General’s Evelyn Tengmaa also reported that registration officials were yet to be deployed to the various centres as of midday.

Officials were going through their own registration before moving to post for the exercise, she reported.

Sources say the delay with the start of the programme has been as a result of technical hiccoughs.

The exercise in the Greater Accra Region will span three months barring any unforeseen circumstances.

So far, only the president has received his Ghana Card, which was printed for him last year.

Meanwhile, the Authority had announced a press briefing over the inability to register security officers as planned.

But the event has been called off.
