Obetsebi-Lamptey ready to co-operate with police

National Chairman of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Jake Otanka Obetsebi Lamptey, has expressed his readiness to cooperate with the Police CID by honouring an invitation for questioning in respect of comments he passed alleging that the NDC masterminded the murder of some people during the Atiwa bye-election, despite strenuously denying the accusation.

Mr. Obetsebi Lamptey claims he is innocent of the charges and does not have an idea of the matter he has been accused of.

The Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service on Tuesday, September 28th, invited three leading members of the NPP to the Police Headquarters in Accra, to assist in the investigations of the alleged murder of three persons during the Atiwa Bye-election.

This follows a petition by Media Analysts of the NDC which says the three NPP officials, caused fear, panic and alarm by proclaiming the death of some people during the elections, and blaming the NDC as the perpetrators.

The police CID subsequently summoned the NPP’s National Chair, Jake Obetsebi Lamptey, its General Secretary, Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie, aka Sir John, and another staunch activist, Frances Assiam to assist them in their investigations.

Speaking in an interview on an Accra-based private radio station, JoyFM, Mr. Obetsebi Lamptey pledged his support to assist the police get to the bottom of the matter as a law abiding citizen. He, however, called on the police to act on other reports from Atiwa.

According to him, there was a case where a vehicle allegedly drove through a crowd at Atiwa, but neither the driver nor the person in charge of the vehicle have been hauled before court, and are moving about freely.

Mr. Obetsebi Lamptey, Sir John and Frances Assiam are to report at the CID department of the Police Headquarters on Friday, October 1.
