OWASS wins ICT competition.

Kumasi, Nov. 5, GNA- Opoku Ware Senior High School (OWASS), at the weekend emerged winners of this year's Information, Communication and Technology (ICT) Expert Competition organised for Second Cycle Institutions in the Ashanti Region in Kumasi.

OWASS amassed a total of 3250 points to win the competition, which was organised by NIIT an ICT Service Provider and training firm. They were given a trophy and souvenirs of NIIT as their prize, whilst Kumasi Anglican Secondary School (KASS) and Yaa Asantewaa Girls' Secondary School (YAGSS) placed second and third with 2875 and 1900 point respectively and had shields and souvenirs as their prizes. Prempeh College, Kumasi High School (KUHIS) and Agogo State College placed forth, fifth, sixth in that order with 1725, 1075 and 975 point respectively and were given souvenirs of NIIT.

A total of 29 schools participated in the two-week event, which was aimed at accessing the level of ICT awareness of the students. In a closing address, Mr. Vivek Verma, Kumasi Centre Manager of NIIT said the representatives of the seven schools, which made it to the grand finale, would undergo a three-month free course in soft ware at NIIT to build their capacity in ICT.

He stressed the need for the nation to develop a comprehensive and globally competitive IT Education system that would be responsive to the Socio- Economic needs of the nation.
