Angry market women from Nyankomasi Ahenkro in Assin South District have demonstrated against the District Assembly and DCE Jonathan Birikorang for illegally extorting GH¢5,000 from them under the guise of market space allocation.
At a press conference, the women accused the assembly of demanding the unauthorised fee without any agreement.
Those unable to pay found their tables and chairs removed by a taskforce likely at night, leaving them stranded.
They claim their spaces have been sold to non-locals, and market land has been auctioned for building, shrinking available areas.
“We now sell under the hot sun with no waste disposal space,” they lamented, appealing to the local government and Central Regional Ministers for intervention.
The women warn they’ll march naked to the Assembly if their livelihoods aren’t restored.
Nyankomasi Ahenkro Assembly Member David Danny Dadzie echoed their pleas to GHOne News Yaw Boagyan, calling the extortion “inappropriate” despite daily ticket payments.
He questioned selling spaces to strangers or land for housing, urging the Assembly to act or face massive backlash.
Efforts to reach DCE Jonathan Birikorang were unsuccessful.
