The Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has reaffirmed the government's commitment to the continued payment of allowances to nursing trainees, a key policy promise of President John Dramani Mahama’s administration.

Speaking during the Government Accountability Series on Friday, July 18, 2025, he said the decision is part of efforts to motivate trainee nurses and promote a healthy working environment within the country’s healthcare sector.

“As I indicated in my submission, we are going to maintain the momentum, so, we are going to continue to do so going forward,” Akandoh stated

Despite some calls for the discontinuation of the policy, the government insists the allowances remain crucial to supporting the future health workforce.

The Ministry of Health, on Thursday, July 17, disbursed GH¢462 million to cover six months of allowances for 120,000 nursing trainees nationwide.

The payment is part of a broader initiative aimed at reducing the financial burden on students pursuing health-related training.

In a statement issued on the same day, the ministry emphasised that the payment fulfills a major campaign promise made by President Mahama during the 2024 general elections.
