The Member of Parliament for Assin South, Rev John Ntim Fordjour, has claimed that Ghana's Parliament is not currently sitting because of the financial troubles of the House.
Speaking in a recent interview on Adom FM, Ntim Fordjour, the Ranking Member of the Defence and Interior Committee of Parliament, claimed that the House has had to postpone its advertised resumption dates on several occasions because the current government has refused to release funds.
He claimed that the House has accumulated huge debts, but the government has failed to release funds for its operation.
"An initial statement was issued (that Parliament was resuming), but because there was no money, they had to postpone it indefinitely, about 3 days later. Hell would have broken loose if some of the things happening now had happened under President Akufo-Addo.
Why resumption of Parliament has been postponed indefinitely - Speaker explains
"This is my third term in Parliament, but this is the first time I have seen that the House cannot have its sittings because there is no money. They have opened and closed the House on several occasions," he said in the Twi dialect.
He added, "We are just praying that the 21st October set for the resumption of the House's sitting would happen."
The MP also claimed that Ghana currently has no substantive Minister of Defence because the House is not sitting.
He pointed out that the appointment process requires the president to inform the Speaker of Parliament about the person he wants as the defence minister for the necessary process to continue. However, this has not been done because the House is not sitting.
"No serious country would have their Minister for Defence position vacant for over a month. But you can't appoint a Minister of Defence now. Why? Because Parliament is not in session."
