A 35-year-old man believed to be a notorious car snatcher, was at the weekend allegedly killed on the Ablekuma-Olebu highway by a mob when the victim purportedly attempted to escape with a Toyota Highlander.
The deceased, identified as Samuel Owusu, was described by the police as a notorious car snatcher operating at Amasaman and its environs.
He died on arrival at the Police Hospital after police personnel from Amasaman had taken him to the health facility for medical care. The body has since been deposited at the hospital for preservation.
Confirming the story to DAILY GUIDE, DSP Elvis Bawa Sadongo, Amasaman District Police Commander, said the suspect was killed on December 5, 2015 by the mob.
Around 7am, police had information that somebody had snatched a Toyota Highlander from the owner on the newly constructed Ablekuma-Olebu highway.
A police patrol team was dispatched to the scene but by the time they got there, the suspect, who had earlier been captured by the mob, had been lynched.
Preliminary information gathered later by the police, according to DSP Sadongo, indicated that Samuel Owusu expressed interest in an unregistered Toyota Highlander, which was being offered for sale by the owner.
In the course of the test drive, Owusu allegedly snatched the vehicle from the owner and sped off.
The owner shouted for help, and so some drivers gave the suspect a hot chase.
Sensing danger, Owusu purportedly abandoned the vehicle and attempted to escape into a nearby bush, but the residents gave him a hot chase and apprehended him.
