A former member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Alhaji Abubakar Saddique Boniface, has taken a swipe at the party over its decision to grant amnesty to persons who were suspended or had disciplinary cases pending.

The NPP, in a letter dated August 16, 2025, and signed by the Acting National Chairman, Danquah Smith Buttey, said the decision followed an emergency meeting of the National Council held on July 25, 2025, describing it as a step towards reconciliation and party unity.

The statement clarified that members who had forfeited their membership must reapply formally to the national secretariat before being reinstated.

“The National Council, in the interest of unity and reconciliation, has resolved to grant a General Amnesty to all party members who have been suspended or whose disciplinary cases are currently pending before the appropriate adjudicatory bodies,” part of the letter said.

However, in reacting to the directive, Boniface, who is now the interim chairman of Alan Kyerematen’s United Party (UP), questioned the rationale behind the amnesty.

He asserted that he, along with others who were sacked from the party, had committed no wrongdoing.

He made this known while speaking at the unveiling of a new political party by Alan Kyerematen on Thursday, October 16, 2025.

“… We have come together that the rejected stone always become the cornerstone of the foundation. We were sacked, but today, they claim they are giving us amnesty. What does amnesty mean? What crime has our new leader committed? What crime did I commit in NPP for you to sack me and today, you are telling me you are giving me amnesty? No way,” he said.

Using an analogy from Islam about how a woman can no longer be a man's wife if he divorces her three times, Boniface rejected the decision, stating that he would not return to the party.

“In Islam, when you divorce a woman three times, she's no longer your wife till thy kingdom comes. I consider myself; I consider people like Baba Alhaji in the Islamic fraternities as being sacked. We don't belong to anybody. We came and contributed, Ghana first,” he added.

Background

Saddique Boniface, together with three others: Hopeson Adorye, Nana Ohene Ntow, and Yaw Buaben Asamoa, were sacked from the party in 2023.

The party accused them of flouting the party’s constitution by supporting the candidature of other aspirants outside the party.

According to a statement by the party, dated November 20, 2023, and signed by its General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, it said the above individuals had publicly endorsed the candidature of a person other than the party's duly elected presidential candidate, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.

“In line with these constitutional provisions, it is the view that the NPP that Hopson Adorye, Nana Ohene Ntow, Boniface Abubakar Saddique and Yaw Boaben Asamoa have Automatically forfeited their membership of the party. They are therefore, no longer members of the party,” part of the statement read.
