No need to worry over Gitmo two - Pelpuo

Dr. Rashid Pelpuo Dr. Rashid Pelpuo

A minister of State at the Presidency Rashid Pelpuo has said Ghanaians have no cause to worry about the arrival of the two former inmates of the Guantanamo Bay prison in the country since Ghana has no enemies in the world.

According to him, Ghana has since time immemorial maintained healthy relationships with all countries and will not change its posture under President John Mahama.

The Mahama-led administration is struggling to convince an increasingly doubtful Ghanaian public that the presence of the former detainees will cause no harm to the country.

The two Yemenis are in the country at the instance of the US government. The Americans have assured the two pose no security threat to the nation.

Ghana’s opposition leader Nana Akufo-Addo has backed numerous calls for the former terror suspects to be returned. Akufo-Addo has described the decision to accept them as illegal, accusing President Mahama of breaching the anti-terrorism act .

Speaking on 'Alhaji and Alhaji' on Radio Gold Saturday, the former Sports minister said Ghanaians have no reason to entertain fear over the existence of the two former terror suspects in the country since the President is in total control of the security of the state.

“He (Mahama) will ensure that he leave a good name for Ghana, he knows what he is doing...he will uphold the freedom of people throughout the world,” Pelpuo stated..

He added: “ This matter is not a religious issue, it’s an international relations affairs and relations between nations. What it has to do is our traditional relations with the US. Ghana has no enemies in the world, we see all countries as friends...We will not wade into the terrorism issue that has assumed religious dimension”.
