Member of Parliament for Damongo, Samuel Abu Jinapor, has said that former President Nana Akufo-Addo deserves an apology over claims that he deliberately failed to assent to the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, also known as the Anti-LGBTQ+ Bill.
Speaking on the floor of Parliament on May 28, 2026, he said the claims are politically motivated and not supported by the facts.

The lawmaker explained that there was no breach of the Constitution, specifically Article 106 (7) in the handling of the bill, insisting that it was not formally presented to the President for assent.
“It was an attempted presentation.. and therefore there was no breach of Article 106 (7). There was no breach,” he said.
He further noted that even the Majority Leader, Mahama Ayariga had described the process as an attempted presentation, arguing that this supports his position.
“The Majority Leader himself has said that it was an attempted presentation and indeed, Mr Speaker, that is the point I was making,” he added.
Jinapor maintained that, based on the circumstances, no bill was actually presented to the former President for assent.
“It is therefore our submission from this side of the house that no bill was presented to President Akufo-Addo,” he stated.
It will be recalled that in 2024, former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo stated that assenting to the anti-LGBT+ Bill would be on hold until after the determination of a pending case at the Supreme Court.
This was after the bill was passed by Ghana’s Parliament on February 28, 2024.

Speaking at a meeting with the diplomatic community at the Peduase Lodge, he mentioned that a private citizen has challenged the constitutionality of the Bill at the Supreme Court.
He, therefore, urged the diplomatic community that Ghana will not turn her back on her enviable, longstanding record of human rights observance and attachment to the rule of law.
