Nkawie hospital cannot perform operations

Nkawie (Ash), April 23, GNA - Major surgery and obstetric emergencies have stopped at the Nkawie-Toase Government Hospital due to the resignation of the only nurse-anaesthetist.

Mr Alex Abugri, Administrator of the Hospital, who disclosed this to the Ghana News Agency, said this situation posed a serious challenge to the facility.

He mentioned frequent power outages and the constant breakdown of the hospital's generator as some other challenges. The hospital, he said, had no fence wall and this facilitates the absconding of patients leading to frequent misunderstanding between the hospital administration and the community.

Mr Abugri appealed to the Atwima-Nwabiagya District Assembly to help provide a fence wall.

He said the bulk of the hospital's funds were locked up with the National Health Insurance Scheme as well as the exemptions and this was negatively affecting its operation.

Another area of concern, according to Mr Abugri, is the lack of residential accommodation for the staff.

The hospital also lacks a properly equipped laundry, compelling the staff of the unit to wash blood-soaked bed sheets and other clothing with their hands.
