Nine individuals, including one woman, have been remanded by an Accra Circuit Court for their alleged involvement in the recent tribal clashes at Nkwanta in the Oti Region.

The accused persons, Evans Mawugbe, Donkor Ebenezer, Solomon Amenu, Robert Dzanka, Kenyenso Senyo, Edwin Yeboah, Yudah Adule, Keteke Joshua, and Grace Ordzi were charged with conspiracy to commit a crime, causing harm, rioting, and rioting with weapons.

The nine did not enter pleas, and presiding Judge Isaac Addo ordered that they be held in custody until the next hearing on July 21, 2025.

Assistant Superintendent of Police Seth Frimpong, representing the prosecution, stated that investigations into the case are ongoing.

According to the prosecution, all the accused are residents of Nkwanta and were apprehended during a combined operation by the Police, Military, and National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) aimed at maintaining peace during the curfew imposed on the area.

On June 26, 2025, they 9, allegedly tried to conduct rituals at the Yam Market, which triggered unrest and led to damage of public and private property.

During the chaos, gunfire was exchanged, causing injuries to several individuals, including Emmanuel Popolampo, Azumah Angela, Akwasi, also known as Commando, and Ruth.

The prosecution further disclosed that an unidentified male victim succumbed to gunshot wounds after being taken to hospital.

While the security forces arrested these nine individuals, others are said to have fled, with investigations continuing.
