Nine confirmed dead in Mankessim accident

Cape Coast, July 16, GNA - Nine people have been confirmed dead and several others seriously injured when the vehicle in which they were traveling got involved in a horrific accident on Friday at Akrom near Ekumfi Swedru, after the Mankessim Bridge in the Central Region.

The passengers were travelling from Accra towards Cape Coast.

Four of the dead have been deposited at the Central Regional Hospital morgue, while the others are at the Saltpond Government Hospital morgue. None of the bodies have been identified as at the time of filing this story.

When the Ghana News Agency (GNA) got to the emergency ward of the Central Regional Hospital, medical personnel were seen busily attending to the injured in their bid to save lives while ambulances continued to cart in more of the injured victims.

An eye witness told GNA that the accident involved an Urvan Bus and a Johnson and Johnson Company vehicle, which he could not immediately tell the type.

It said a Fire Tender, which was called to the scene of the accident also crushed into a private car belonging to the Gomoa East District Chief Executive that was parked along road.

The occupants of the private vehicle were unhurt but the fire officers received various degrees of injuries.

Some of the injured are receiving treatment at the Saltpond Hospital.
